DARBY, Pa. — Firefighters are battling a large fire in Darby, Pennsylvania, that sent towering flames and thick black smoke into the air on Wednesday morning, prompting officials to issue public health advisories for nearby communities.
The fire broke out in an area believed to be a scrapyard or junkyard near Industrial Drive and Hook Road in Darby. Emergency crews responded quickly after reports of the blaze, with multiple fire units arriving to contain the rapidly burning fire.
Aerial footage from the scene showed intense flames consuming the property while heavy black smoke billowed into the sky, remaining visible from surrounding neighborhoods in Delaware County and portions of Southwest Philadelphia.
As firefighting operations continued, authorities urged residents to avoid the area and allow emergency responders to work safely. Officials have not yet announced the cause of the fire, and there have been no immediate reports of injuries.
Darby Township officials advised residents living near the fire to remain indoors, keep windows and doors closed, and call 911 if they experience an emergency related to the incident.
Because of the large volume of smoke, the City of Philadelphia also issued guidance for residents in nearby Southwest Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Department of Public Health recommended limiting outdoor activity, especially strenuous exercise, to reduce exposure to smoke and airborne particles.
Health officials also encouraged residents to:
- Stay indoors whenever possible.
- Keep windows and exterior doors closed.
- Use fans or air conditioning in recirculation mode to avoid drawing smoky air indoors.
- Wear a well-fitting mask if they must spend time outside in areas affected by smoke.
Emergency crews continue working to bring the fire under control while monitoring conditions to prevent it from spreading to nearby properties. Investigators are expected to examine the scene once it is safe to determine what caused the blaze.
Motorists are encouraged to avoid the vicinity of Industrial Drive and Hook Road, as emergency vehicles and firefighting equipment may cause traffic disruptions throughout the day.
